A Quick Day Trip to Richmond

Now is a great time to do a quick trip out of the Washington, D.C. area!  The skies are gloomy so what better way to spend the day than heading to Richmond to see the Terra Cotta Warriors!  First I recommend going online to the Virginia Fine Arts Museum website and obtain your tickets before you leave.  We are early risers in our house so we were out the door by 7am.
The drive to Richmond isn’t a two hour trip in good traffic so we arrived far ahead of schedule and decided to stop at the Virginia State Capitol before heading to the museum. The capitol is a great place to visit and we were fortunate to be there on the morning the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) were laying a wreath to commemorate George Washington’s birthday.

Parking can be challenging but we were fortunate to find a parking meter on the street behind the capitol building. Waze showed a few parking garages so if you are looking old to put the parking garage in your GPS to get you to the nearest parking.
We spent about an hour looking around the visitors center which is located at the base of the hill on Bank Street and the entrance you must enter to take the tour to enter the Capitol.  Next we headed for the  Art museum.
Parking at the museum is $5.00 upon entry to the garage. There appeared to be street parking options but we choose to use the garage.  Then on to the museum!

The suggestion earlier to get tickets in advance really paid off.  Walking into the museum around 10:15am and walked down to the entrance of the exhibit.

We were very excited to see all the beautiful artifacts, learn about the history of how they found the warriors and work our way through the exhibit halls.

Each exhibit showed some unique view of the live of the Emperor.

One of my favorite things was this beautiful jade figure. Not green as you would expect but beautiful!
Then we came to the main hall where the warriors were being displayed.  What a sight! I’m sure I would have been intimidated by these guys if I came across them out in a field.

While visiting the museum area we decided to drop into the Virginia History museum directly across from the parking garage.  They had a wonderful exhibit celebrating 100 years since the end of WWI. First, I couldn’t believe that it has been 100 years since the end...not that I’m that old...
The Virginia History Museum WWI exhibit surprised us by having things such as Harry Houdini’s handcuffs, exhibits on the draft, Woodrow Wilson’s hat and cane, life during the war...and so much more! Well worth the trip!  Veterans can show their ID and get in free!

So now it was around 1ish in the afternoon and we were quite hungry by now. We were given a recommendation to go and visit a wonderful place called Can Can Brassiere. It was delicious!  They have lovely French onion soup in a small tourine. Fresh bread was brought to the table and we ordered a fresh fish and I had the steak au pouive. YUM!

While I highly recommend the food, I REALLY recommend the dessert!  We love to travel and love southern Germany so when we saw the dessert menu we had to have the Black Forest Crepe.

IT WAS PHENOMENAL!!!!

So at the end of our meal we started back towards the DC area. This was one of the best Valentines weekends we have had!  Hope you enjoyed coming along!

Please stay tuned for more adventures from DC and Away! I will be posting some of our past adventures and recommendations.  Soon we will offer itinerary information for you to download and use in your own planning strategies! Tune in!
